Arbor Day 2008, will be held Friday, April 25th, at Pickering Field

J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City initiated the first Arbor Day, the tree planters' holiday, in 1872. Today The National Arbor Day Foundation is the world's largest tree-planting environmental organization.

Goodnoe Elementary School first and third grade students compete every year to design Newtown's Arbor Day Poster. "Students are asked to create an image that presents an understanding of the importance of trees and communicated a message of environmental caring and of hope for the future of our planet." states Arbor Day Poster Contest Coordinator, Kati Sowiak.

Arbor Day chairperson, Alisa Myles, observed, "The students artwork shows that they are really understanding what the event is all about." Six posters were chosen from 200 entries reviewed by judges Mayor Glenn Hains, Council Rock School Board representatives Cathy Triverio and Rick Abramson, Newtown Township representative Sue Sutton, Arbor Day chairperson Alisa Myles, and Competition Coordinator Kati Sowiak. The first grade winners were: Alex Plugara, Katie Gallant, amd Patrick Mulcahey. The fifth grade winners were: Hailey Gouza, Mike Miller, and Patrick Molloy. All of the participating students posters were exhibited at the event. Winning posters were displayed in storefronts throughout the Newtown area, on the Newtown and Council Rock websites and at Goodnoe Elementary School.
